Spiritual Signals—On Letting Go

spiritual signals letting go

Spiritual Signals offers weekly spiritual reflections for seniors, drawing from diverse traditions. This week, we reflect on the theme of letting go.

Introduction

As we age, the things we once held tightly—roles, expectations, regrets—begin to loosen their grip. Letting go isn’t giving up; it’s growing deeper. Across spiritual traditions, the act of release is seen not as loss, but as a way to return to what matters most.

✝️ Christian Contemplative

In the Christian contemplative tradition, letting go is not resignation—it’s trust. Thomas Merton wrote, “We do not find the meaning of life by ourselves alone—we find it with God.” Releasing our own grip makes room for grace.

☸️ Buddhist Insight

The Buddha taught that craving and clinging are the roots of suffering. Letting go of fixed identities and desires helps us meet life—and aging—with a lightness of being. Thich Nhat Hanh called this “the art of suffering well.”

✡️ Sufi View

Sufi poets speak of surrender as the path to love. Rumi writes, “Try to be like the night to cover others’ faults.” Letting go of judgment, pride, and fear draws us back to the heart, where love does its quiet work.

🧠 Modern Psychology

In acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), letting go means observing our thoughts without being ruled by them. Dr. Steven Hayes notes: “Letting go is not about giving up. It’s about giving in—to the moment.”
