Spiritual Signals — Living Out Loud

Living out loud as a spiritual senior

Living out loud as a spiritual practice isn’t about noise—it’s about integrity, joy, and spiritual alignment. Last week, we explored the quiet strength of belonging. This week, we lift our gaze to something bolder—living out loud. Not loud in volume, but loud in truth. Loud in joy. Loud in the way a soul begins to hum when it’s no longer hiding.

To live out loud is not to demand attention—it is to live in alignment. To speak your name without apology. To bless the room just by walking into it, because you are fully yourself.

We know this doesn’t always come easy. Many of us were raised to shrink, to defer, to keep our brightest colors tucked away. But life—especially this stage of life—calls us to bring our full selves forward.

Howard Thurman, the great Christian mystic and theologian, once said, “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.”

This kind of aliveness shows up across many traditions:

✝️ Christianity

In the Gospels, Jesus urges his followers not to hide their light under a bushel, but to let it shine. Living out loud is an act of witness—bringing your full self to the world as a reflection of divine light and purpose.

☸️ Buddhism

In Buddhist teachings, “right speech” encourages truthfulness spoken with compassion. Living out loud doesn’t mean speaking often—it means speaking with integrity, and letting your life itself be an expression of mindfulness.

✡️ Judaism

The Psalms are filled with voices crying out to God in honesty, anguish, joy, and praise. To live out loud in the Jewish tradition is to bring one’s full emotional life into dialogue with the Divine—and to sanctify everyday expression.

☪️ Islam

In Islam, the faithful are called to live with ihsan—beauty and excellence in action. When we live with intention, grace, and authenticity, even our ordinary gestures become reflections of spiritual truth.

🌿 Indigenous Traditions

In many Indigenous worldviews, to live out loud is to live in right relationship with the land, with spirit, and with the community. Voice and presence are gifts meant not only for the self but for the circle of life around us.

Living out loud is not about ego. It’s about integrity. It’s about honoring the story you carry, the wisdom you’ve earned, and the gifts that still want to be given.

Making something from my art to give my grandchildren since I’m not leaving society better than when I found it. I tried!

I use my voice by teaching a Sunday School class and facilitating a grief recovery group. A week ago I also served as the speaker in my pastor’s absence.
