Spiritual Signals–On Stillness

the beauty of stillness in later life

Stillness is not what happens when everything stops — it’s what allows everything to begin again. In later life, quiet can surprise us. At first, it feels like something missing — a gap once filled by voices, work, or noise. But with time, the quiet begins to take shape. It becomes a companion, steady and listening, reminding us that presence doesn’t always require sound.

Traditions Speak

✝️ Christianity
“Be still, and know that I am God.” Stillness in prayer is not withdrawal but trust — a quiet confidence that grace moves even when we do not. The sacred rarely shouts; it arrives as a whisper that waits to be heard.

✡️ Judaism
In the Hebrew scriptures, stillness often follows awe. Elijah did not find God in the wind or the earthquake but in the “sound of sheer silence.” In that moment, stillness became revelation — not emptiness, but encounter.

☸️ Buddhism
Buddhist teachers remind us that stillness reveals movement itself. Thoughts arise and fall away like waves on water. Within stillness, everything flows — and the mind, no longer grasping, becomes clear.

☯️ Taoism
The Tao Te Ching speaks of the Way that cannot be forced. Stillness is the balance point between doing and being, the pause that allows harmony to return. When we rest in the Tao, life arranges itself.

☪️ Islam
In Islam, stillness deepens through remembrance — dhikr, the repetition of divine names. In that rhythm of breath and prayer, the heart quiets, and the seeker feels the nearness of the One who has always been near.

🪶 Indigenous Wisdom
Many Indigenous elders say stillness is how the land speaks. To sit quietly on the earth is to hear the stories of wind and water — to know that belonging is older than speech.

🧠 Secular Insight
Scientists now find that intentional stillness lowers stress, calms the body, and clarifies the mind. The quiet brain is not empty; it’s alive to wonder, more open to seeing what has always been there.

I recently discovered this again with a shoulder injury that didn’t allow me to do things. One day, instead of watching tv or listening to music I turned off devices and just sat quietly for awhile. It was enlightening and helped me to get more centered after my husband’s death in March. Thanks for the reminder. It does make a difference.

    In The Quiet

    Solitude, oh solitude,
    You arrive with deafening silence,
    Leaving the noise behind,
You bring the Whole of Me,
    and gets me Free,

    Understanding and Knowledge,
    Sprouts all Meaning,
    Hints of Who I Am,
    The Wisdom in your silence,
    Echoes deeply,

    Seeing not with my eyes,
    But with my Heart,
I absorb The Light of Life,
    The glow within gives clarity,
To all the Love we share,
    You for Me,
    Me for You,
    We for The All,

    In Your Stillness,
    Joyfulness is unfolding…
