Social connection is one of the most critical aspects of human health and well-being, shaping our mental and physical health. The U.S. Surgeon General’s Advisory on the Healing Power of Social Connection and Community unpacks the complexity of social connection, the factors that shape social connections, and who is most at risk for social disconnection.

I’ve grown more inward as I age and I’m not sure if that’s healthy or not. I enjoy my private time to be with my pets, reading and watching quality programs. Part of my isolation is a result of my two dear friends moving, and being too far for a drive to get there easily. I do enjoy my spiritual friends and attend Columbia Center of Spiritual Living both in person and zoom. I also belong to our local garden club which I like.

Thank you for sharing so openly. What you’ve described — growing more inward with time — is something many of us can relate to. There’s something beautiful and even necessary about the quiet joys you’ve named: time with pets, good books, meaningful shows. And staying connected through your spiritual community and garden club sounds like a life thoughtfully rooted.

It’s okay to value solitude and still miss the closeness of old friends. You’re not alone in holding both. We’re grateful to have you here with us — and hope this space can offer a bit more connection when you need it.
